Gutter Repair: What Gets Fixed Now and What Waits

Some gutter faults take five minutes while we are already on the ladder. Some need a second trip. Some mean the run is finished. We tell you which, and why, before you spend anything.

1000+ happy customers

More than a thousand customers have had us out to clear their gutters.

  • The run cleaned first so the fault can be seen properly
  • Small leaks resealed and loose hangers refastened on the spot
  • Sags rehung and slope reset toward the outlet
  • Damaged elbows, sections and straps replaced
  • Fixings chosen to suit salt air on waterfront homes
  • A plain answer when a run is not worth repairing

Most gutter faults turn up during a cleaning visit, when we are already standing at the eave with the run emptied out in front of us. At that point the owner needs one thing from us: a straight answer about what happens next. In our experience, every fault lands in one of four places. We can fix it right now. We can fix it, but on a second trip. It is not worth fixing. Or it is not a gutter problem at all. Here is what falls into each group and what usually caused it.

Fixed during the visit

A lot of what goes wrong with a gutter is small. An end cap starts to drip because the sealant has dried and cracked. A corner joint weeps a line of water down the siding. One hanger screw has backed out and the gutter dips a centimetre between brackets. A downspout section has slipped out of the elbow above it after a knock. A wall strap has rusted and let go.

These take minutes, and it makes no sense to book a separate trip for them. We show you what we found, and if you say yes, we fix it once the run is clean and dry: we reseal the joint, drive the hanger home or replace it, refit the slipped section and swap the strap.

Fixed on a return visit

Some repairs need parts we do not carry on every job, or more time than a cleaning visit allows. A long run that sags across several hangers needs rehanging and the slope reset so water heads back to the outlet. A section kinked by a falling limb or a slab of snow needs a new length. A crushed bottom elbow or a split downspout needs replacing. An outlet that has torn around its hole needs a new piece.

Oceanside winters cause plenty of this. Fir and cedar limbs come down in the wind storms that blow in off the Strait of Georgia. On higher ground toward Errington, Coombs and Hilliers, wet snow sits on roofs more often than at the beach and can bend gutters when it slides. We quote the repair on the spot or soon after, then come back to do it.

Past repair

Most gutters are worth fixing. Some are not. When the metal has rusted through along a good part of a run, when every seam has been sealed and resealed and still drips, or when the run has no slope left to work with, patching costs money and buys very little time.

Older steel gutters close to salt water are the most common example. Salt air works on bare steel, and a run that has been on a waterfront house for many years can be thin in places you cannot see from the ground. We tell you when we think a run has reached that point, before you spend anything on it.

Not a gutter problem

Some faults show up at the gutter but start somewhere else. If a gutter will not stay on because the fascia board behind it is soft, the board needs a carpenter first. If water is getting behind the gutter because of the roof edge or missing flashing, that is for a roofer. If a downspout drains well but the buried pipe at its foot backs up, a drainage contractor needs to look at the line. We do not do those jobs. We show you where the problem is, explain what we saw, and once the other work is done we can hang or reconnect the gutter.

What leads to each

On Oceanside roofs, the usual causes are worth knowing because they tell you what to watch. Wet needle mats under Douglas fir and cedar make a gutter heavy, and weight over time is what pulls hangers loose. Wind off the water lifts loose runs and drops limbs. Snow on inland roofs bends lips and outlets. Salt air near the shore corrodes fixings. Ladders leaned straight against the gutter crush the front lip.

Regular cleaning prevents a lot of it, which is why gutter maintenance and repair work well together. Every repair comes with a free quote and our guarantee.

Got questions?

Gutter repair questions

Can you repair a gutter without cleaning it first?

Not properly. Sealant will not stick to a seam covered in sludge, and you cannot judge the slope of a run full of needles. Every repair starts with that section cleaned out.

A fir branch came down on my gutter in a storm. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. A dented section can sometimes be reshaped and rehung, and a kinked or torn length can be replaced. We look at the hangers either side too, since the impact often loosens them.

My gutter is pulling away from the house. What causes that?

Usually the weight of a full, wet gutter over time, or hangers that were spaced too far apart. Sometimes the board behind has gone soft and the screws have nothing to hold.

If the board is sound, we rehang the run. If it is soft, a carpenter needs to replace it first.

Do you fix fascia boards?

No, that is carpentry. We show you where the board has gone soft and how far, and once it has been replaced we can hang the gutter back on it.

How do I know if my gutter should be replaced instead of repaired?

When the metal has rusted through or thinned along most of a run, when seams keep reopening no matter how often they are sealed, or when the run has no slope left to work with. We tell you before you spend money on patches.

Can you repair a gutter in the rain?

Some fixes, yes, like rehanging a section. Sealant needs a dry surface to bond, so resealing waits for a dry spell. We book accordingly.

My downspout has come loose from the pipe in the ground. Can you reconnect it?

Usually, yes. A downspout knocked by a mower or a wheelbarrow often just slips out of the fitting at the top of the buried pipe. We refit it, replace a crushed bottom elbow if needed and strap it back to the wall.

If the buried pipe itself is broken or blocked below ground, that part is for a drainage contractor, and we tell you where the problem starts.

Do waterfront homes need different repair parts?

The gutter itself is the same, but plain steel screws and straps rust quickly in salt air. On homes close to the water we use fixings that suit that setting, so the repair is not undone by corrosion a few winters later.
