Bowser sits on Highway 19A at the north end of our service area, with Deep Bay just beyond it at the south end of Baynes Sound. The land here rises from the shore, and a lot of homes are built to make the most of the view. That usually means a house that steps down its lot: one storey at the road, two or three on the side facing the water, with a deck or a patio tucked under the tallest eave.
The tall side is the hard side
On a sloped lot the gutter on the uphill side may be a few steps off a short ladder. The one on the downhill side can be well over twice that height, above a lower deck or a steep bank. It is also the side that faces the weather off the water, so it often takes the most rain.
Homeowners tend to clean the easy side themselves and leave the tall side, which is exactly the side that matters most. We set up for the downhill runs properly. That might mean a taller ladder on stable footing below, a ladder standoff to keep weight off the gutter, or working the run from the roof where the pitch allows. If a section cannot be reached safely, we tell you up front.

Decks under the gutter line
Many of these view homes have a deck under the eave. Debris dropped from the gutter lands on it, ladder feet can mark it, and an overflowing gutter soaks it every time it rains. Water pouring off the same spot on a deck season after season will stain the boards and shorten their life.
We bag debris at the gutter so it does not rain down onto the boards, pad ladder contact points, and check the downspout that drains that roof is clear from top to bottom. If an overflow has been soaking a deck, a clean usually fixes it. If it does not, the problem is often a run that has lost its slope, and our gutter repair service can reset it.
Upland lots and forest
Not every Bowser home looks at the water. Up the slope toward Highway 19, lots are larger and sit among fir, cedar and maple. These roofs fill faster than the view homes below them and stay damp under the canopy. They are also where gutter guards earn their keep, because the tall runs are hard to reach often.

Got questions?
Bowser and Deep Bay gutter questions
Is Bowser too far north for you?
No. Bowser and Deep Bay are part of our regular service area, up Highway 19A past Qualicum Bay. Send the address and a short description of the house and we will get a free quote back to you.
Our house is three storeys on the water side. Can you reach it?
Usually, yes. Tall walls on sloped lots are common along this coast, and we plan the ladder setup before we start. If a run cannot be reached safely from the ground or from the roof, we will tell you before the job, not halfway through it.
Will you damage the deck or the railings?
We pad ladder feet and tops where they meet decking, railings or siding, and we keep debris off the deck surface by bagging it at the gutter. If the deck has a finish you are worried about, tell us and we will plan around it.
Are gutter guards worth it on a view home?
They can be, especially where the tall side is hard to reach. A fine mesh guard keeps most needles out, so the gutter needs a full clean less often. It still needs an occasional rinse, and we will tell you if your trees make guards a poor fit.
An arbutus leans over our roof. Why is the gutter full in midsummer?
Arbutus does not wait for fall. It peels its bark and drops its old leaves through the summer, so the gutter under one can be packed while the rest of the house is bare. The curls of bark and leathery leaves lie flat and sit there until the first fall rain soaks them. A clean in late summer clears that load before the wet season starts.
