Dashwood Gutter Cleaning Under Fir, Cedar and Maple
Dashwood homes sit in tall second-growth timber, and each tree fills a gutter in its own way. We clear all of it, flush the downspouts and take the debris away.

Dashwood is the rural stretch north-west of Qualicum Beach, between Highway 19A and the newer Highway 19, where homes sit on larger lots cut out of second-growth forest. The trees are the whole story for gutters here. They are tall, they are close to the house, and between them they drop something into the gutter all year round.
What comes out of a Dashwood gutter tells you which trees stand over it. Each kind of debris behaves differently once it is in the trough, and each needs handling a little differently.
Douglas fir: needles and cones
Fir needles are the steady background load. They fall a few at a time, every month, and settle into a dense mat along the bottom of the gutter. Once that mat gets wet it holds water like a sponge, grows moss, and turns into something close to soil. Cones roll down the roof and lodge at the outlet, where they act like a plug and catch everything that follows.
A hose alone will not shift a fir mat. We scoop it out by hand along the full run, pick the cones out of each outlet, and only then flush.

Western red cedar: fronds and fine litter
Cedar sheds its old fronds in fall, and they come down in flat sprays that drape across the gutter and the top of the downspout. They break down fast into a fine brown litter that slips past coarse screens and settles in the downspout elbows. On houses under cedar the downspouts are often the first part to block, even when the trough looks only half full.
Bigleaf maple and alder: the fall rush
Maple leaves are large and arrive in a few weeks in fall, sometimes all at once after a wind. Wet maple leaves lie flat and overlap, forming a lid over the gutter outlet. Alder adds smaller leaves and, in late winter, catkins. This is the load that sets the timing on many lots: one clean once the maples are bare in late fall, then a spring visit for the needles and fronds the conifers have dropped over winter.

Moss and seedlings
Under heavy shade, roofs grow moss and gutters stay damp for days. Clumps of moss slide off the shingles into the trough, and if the mat of needles has been sitting long enough, seedlings take root in it. We clear both out of the gutter, roots and all. Moss on the roof itself is a separate job.
The work
On the job

Branches after a blow
Tall timber drops limbs in winter storms. A branch that lands on a gutter can bend the front edge, pull a hanger or open a seam. When we clean, we look along each run for that kind of damage, and our gutter repair service can fix it on the spot or quote it.

Getting a quote
Tell us what trees stand nearest the roof and how many buildings have gutters, and we will send a free quote. If you would rather clean less often, ask about gutter guards. We also serve Qualicum Bay and French Creek.

Got questions?
Dashwood gutter cleaning questions
Our gutters fill up again within months. Is that normal here?
Under tall conifers, yes. Fir and cedar drop something every month of the year, not just in fall. Many houses in the trees need a clean once the maples are bare in late fall and another in spring for the conifer build-up. Gutter guards can stretch the gap between full cleans.
There are seedlings growing in our gutter. Is that a problem?
It means there has been enough soil-like debris sitting wet in the trough for long enough to grow in. The roots hold more water and block flow. We pull the plants and the mat they grow in, then flush the run and the downspout.
A windstorm dropped branches on the roof. Can you check the gutters?
Yes. We clear branches lying in the gutter and look for bent sections, pulled hangers and split seams where a limb has hit. Anything damaged we can repair or quote separately.
Can gutter guards stop cedar fronds and hemlock needles?
A fine mesh stops most of both. Very short needles and fine debris still settle on top of the mesh and need rinsing off now and then. We fit guards only on a gutter that has been fully cleaned first.
Cones keep plugging our downspout outlet. Would a strainer in the outlet fix it?
Not on its own. A strainer keeps cones out of the downspout, but they do not go anywhere else: they pile up on top of it, and the trough backs up behind the pile. Under tall fir that can mean overflow sooner, not later. A full-length mesh guard keeps cones out of the trough altogether, which usually suits these roofs better. We look at your outlets and tell you which way we would go.
