French Creek sits between Parksville and Qualicum Beach, where the creek of the same name runs out to the Strait of Georgia. The harbour at its mouth shelters fishing boats and pleasure craft, and the passenger ferry to Lasqueti Island leaves from there. Around it are beachfront streets, homes along Highway 19A and quieter subdivisions further inland.
That spread means two quite different gutter jobs inside one small community, and we handle both. A house a block from the beach and a house in the trees by the creek can sit a few minutes apart and still need nothing like the same clean.
Near the harbour and the beach
Close to the water, many roofs have open sky above them. Instead of leaves, their gutters collect moss, grit washed off the shingles, sand blown up from the shore and sometimes broken shell where gulls have dropped clams and mussels onto the roof to crack them. Gull droppings wash in too, and the mix sets into a crust along the bottom of the trough.
Salt spray dries on the seaward side of a house in a thin film. It does little harm to an aluminum trough, but it is worth a look at end caps and corner seams, where sealant can let go over time. We clean that side by hand and mention anything at a seam that is starting to drip.

Along the creek
Back from the shore, the creek runs between banks of western red cedar, Douglas fir, bigleaf maple and alder. Homes near it sit in shade for much of the day, and the gutters stay damp. Wet needles and cedar sprays break down into a dark sludge that holds water, grows moss and, after a season or two, sprouts seedlings.
That sludge will not rinse out. We scoop it, scrape the trough, and then flush the downspout to make sure nothing went down ahead of us. After a big wind, check for small branches lying across the gutter. One stick at an outlet is enough to back up a whole run.

When the wind comes off the Strait
The shoreline here faces open water, and winter storms push rain across it sideways. On the exposed side of a house, that rain hits the roof hard and reaches the gutter in bursts rather than a steady trickle. A trough that copes with a calm downpour can still spill over its front lip when a gust drives a sheet of water down the shingles all at once.
A clean trough is the first part of the answer, because a crust of grit and shell at the outlet slows the run just when it needs to empty fastest. Once it is clear, we watch how the seaward runs drain. If a long run has only one downspout, or the outlet is small for the roof above it, we say so, and adding an outlet is work our gutter repair service can quote.

Booking a clean
Send us the address, a line about which trees are nearby and how many roofs have gutters. We will come and look and send you a free quote. If needles keep coming back, fine-mesh gutter guards are worth a conversation, and we will tell you plainly whether they suit your trees.

Got questions?
French Creek gutter questions
Is French Creek part of Parksville?
No. It is a separate, unincorporated community that sits between Parksville and Qualicum Beach, within the Regional District of Nanaimo. We cover it the same way we cover both towns on either side of it.
We live in a manufactured home with a low roof. Is it still worth booking?
Yes. A low roof is easy to reach, but the gutter still fills, and on a low roof an overflow lands right beside the walls and the skirting. A low job is usually a quick job, and the quote is free either way.
How often should a house near the water have its gutters cleaned?
With few trees overhead, once a year is often enough, usually in the fall. Add a second visit if there is a big fir, cedar or maple nearby. After the first clean we can tell you which group your house is in, based on what came out.
Will you clean around solar panels on the roof?
Yes. We work from the gutter edge and do not lean anything on the panels or walk on them. Leaves and needles often collect along the bottom edge of an array and wash into the gutter below, so those runs get a careful look.
