Eavestrough Cleaning That Starts With the Roof Above It

Shingles, shakes, metal and tile each send something different into the eavestrough. The roof decides how we clear it and when in the year it is worth booking.

Most people judge an eavestrough by the tree beside it. We start one level up, with what the roof itself is made of. Every square metre of roof above the trough is a funnel, and the covering on it decides what slides down, how fast the water arrives and whether we can stand on it. A shingle roof under no trees still fills an eavestrough with grit. A metal roof under a big fir may stay emptier than you expect. Across Parksville, Qualicum Beach and the rest of Oceanside we clean under all of them, and each one changes the method and the best time to book.

Asphalt shingles

The most common roof here, and the one that sends the most hidden material into the trough. Shingles are coated in mineral granules, and rain washes a steady trickle of them off every year. In the eavestrough they settle to the bottom and mix with fine needle bits into a heavy, dark sludge that sits under the leaves where you cannot see it.

That sludge is why we do not stop once the leaves are out. We scrape the trough floor, lift the grit out by hand and only then rinse. Left behind, it slows the water, holds moisture against the metal and drifts down into the downspout elbows. Timing is flexible on a shingle roof with no trees: one clean a year, after the fall leaves, usually covers it.

Cedar shakes

Shake roofs are less common now but still around on older homes and cottages. Wood fibre, splinters and moss break off the shakes as they age, and on a north-facing slope or under fir the moss can be thick. What lands in the eavestrough is spongy and holds water like a cloth.

We never walk a shake roof. Old shakes split underfoot and the surface is slick for much of the year. Everything is done from the ladder, working along the eave. Shake roofs tend to need a clean in late spring as well as fall, because the moss grows through the wet months and sheds as it dries.

Metal roofs

A metal roof sheds water fast. In a downpour the rain can come off the edge quickly enough to overshoot the front lip of the eavestrough, so the trough may look fine and still let water down the wall. Leaves and needles tend to slide down to the eave rather than catch on the roof, so the debris arrives in the trough in clumps.

Snow is the other concern, mostly on inland lots toward Errington and Coombs, where it falls and sits more often than on the beach. Wet snow lets go of a metal roof in one slab and can catch the trough on its way down. When we clean under a metal roof, we check every hanger for bends.

Concrete tile and low slopes

Tile is heavy, durable and easy to crack if someone steps in the wrong place. Moss and lichen grow in the grooves, and fine debris collects in the gaps between rows before it reaches the trough. We work tile roofs entirely from the ladder.

Low-slope roofs over additions, sunrooms and carports drain slowly. Needles sit on them for weeks before rain finally carries them to the edge, so the short eavestrough along a low roof often holds more than the long one on the main house.

When moss comes off the roof

If a roofer or moss company has treated the roof, expect the eavestrough to fill over the following weeks as the dead moss loosens and washes down. Booking the clean straight after the treatment wastes a visit. Waiting through a few heavy rains means the trough is emptied once, properly.

The work

On the job

The same steps under every roof

The covering changes the emphasis, not the order. Solids come out first, by hand, into a bucket and then a bag. Grit and sludge are scraped off the bottom. A gentle rinse from a garden hose follows the trough to each outlet, and every downspout gets a flush until the water comes out freely at the bottom. We do not blast debris down your walls, and nothing is tipped into your garden.

Choosing your dates

Here is the short version for Oceanside. Shingle roofs with few trees: once, in November or December, after the leaves are down. Any roof under fir or cedar: add a spring visit. Shake roofs: spring and fall. Metal and tile: once or twice depending on trees, with a hanger check before the first snow on higher ground. After a moss treatment: wait a few weeks of rain.

Rain here mostly arrives between October and April, and July and August are usually dry, so the gutters fill quietly all summer and then take the full load at once. If you are unsure which pattern fits your roof, ask for a free quote and we will tell you what we see.

Why choose us

Why choose us for eavestrough cleaning

We know roofs, not just troughs

What sits on your roof decides what ends up in the eavestrough. We look up before we start scooping.

Off the fragile stuff

Tile and old shakes crack underfoot. We work them from the ladder and the eave, not from the roof surface.

Honest about timing

If dead moss is still coming down after a roof treatment, we will tell you a later booking gets more out.

Insured and WCB-registered

Both are in place before a ladder goes up at your house. Locally owned, more than ten years on Vancouver Island rooflines, and every job guaranteed.

Got questions?

Eavestrough questions

Is an eavestrough different from a gutter?

No. Eavestrough is the older Canadian word for the same channel along the edge of the roof. Plenty of people on the Island still use it, and you will hear both from us.

There is dark sand in the bottom of my eavestrough. Is my roof failing?

Not necessarily. Asphalt shingles shed granules all their lives, a little more when new and a lot more near the end. A thin layer is normal.

If we find thick drifts of it, especially below one slope, we mention it so you can ask a roofer to take a look.

Will you walk on my roof to reach the eavestrough?

Not on concrete tile, cedar shake or steep metal. Those surfaces crack or get slippery, and we can do the work from a ladder with a stand-off and extension tools.

On a low, sound asphalt roof we may step onto it where that is the safer way to reach an inside corner.

I just had my roof moss treated. When should I book the eavestrough clean?

Give it a few good rains. Dead moss loosens and washes off over the following weeks, and most of it ends up in the trough.

If we clean too soon, the eavestrough fills again with what is still on the roof.

Do you use a pressure washer inside the eavestrough?

No. Blasting debris out sprays it over your walls and windows. We take solids out by hand and use plain hose water to rinse the trough and test the downspouts. We also offer soft washing and pressure washing for the outside of the house, but that is a separate job.

My metal roof sheds snow in sheets. Can that hurt the eavestrough?

Yes. A slab of wet snow sliding off a metal roof can catch the outer lip and bend the trough or pull hangers loose. We check the hangers under metal roofs closely.

Anything bent is covered on our gutter repair page.
